Why You Need a Carbon Monoxide Alarm at Home

Most people understand the importance of smoke alarms in their home, but fewer people make a point of installing carbon monoxide alarms. However, a carbon monoxide alarm is arguably even more important than a smoke alarm for the following reasons.

Carbon Monoxide is Odorless

Unlike smoke and many other toxic substances that can be detected at home, carbon monoxide has no smell. There is no distinct odor that will signal its presence. Some people who did not know this have been poisoned by carbon monoxide gas.

It is Colorless

Smoke from the stove or another home appliance can usually be seen before it turns deadly, unless it comes from a fast-moving fire. However, carbon monoxide is not visible. There are no visual indications to reveal it is permeating the home environment. Unable to see it means that many home residents fail to see carbon monoxide in any form and therefore remain oblivious to its presence.

It is Not Uncommon

Because carbon monoxide can be released due to malfunctioning combustion related to an appliance like the furnace, hot water tank, or wood burning stove, it is sometimes produced before residents are aware that an appliance is not working properly. That is why it is a good idea to have appliances checked routinely by an expert.

It is Deadly

Carbon monoxide, when breathed by humans, does not cause specific symptoms that are easily recognizable. Rather, victims may experience generalized flu-like symptoms and assume they have a virus. Untreated carbon monoxide exposure at lethal levels can lead to unconsciousness, coma, or even death.

Every home should have a carbon monoxide alarm installed on each level. Early detection can lead to getting faulty appliances fixed as well as save lives. Battery operated detectors should have the batteries replaced at least annually, or as needed.
