Learning about history can be both fun and educational. However, what happens when the subject matter that is being taught cannot be considered “fun?” In these instances, it is even more important than ever to teach about these subject matters. Here are some reasons why teaching about the Holocaust is more important now than it ever was.
Highlighting Teamwork
Even though the Holocaust happened does not mean there were not active efforts to stop it. It eventually ended because of the coalition of military and civilian forces working against the Nazis and those who sympathized with them. This can teach people visiting the Holocaust Center how important it is even in these modern times to join forces and defend those who facing genocide today.
Extreme Actions
By teaching about these things at the Holocaust Center, people can learn about how others respond during very extreme situations or under incredible stress. There were many actions taken during the Holocaust, both good and bad, heroic and villainous. It is difficult to gauge just how other may respond to certain behaviors until and unless the past is learned from.
Reflections
By studying about atrocities such as the Holocaust, students can reflect on such things as the power that extreme ideologies can hold over other individuals as well as the corruption that officials can wield. They also learn about propaganda and how certain groups can be targeted for actions of hate and violence.
