Why Choose Centerless Grinding?

When you need to surface finish the outside diameter of cylindrical materials, you have two basic choices. You can use a machining method which holds the workpiece firmly in place while the machine grinds the surface, or you could use a process known as centerless grinding. Center-less methods offer many benefits today and here are some reasons to consider them for your business.

No Center

Machining an outer diameter (while the workpiece rolls around) might not seem like a precise process. However, this is not the case because modern center-less machines work on a simple but very effective principle. The machine has two wheels. One wheel has abrasive material (grinder), and the other firmly holds the workpiece against the grinder wheel.

As the workpiece spins, a grinder wheel removes the outer layer of material slowly and efficiently. The process is perfect for rust and corrosion removal from steel or iron pipe, and it’s often used to create roundness and the correct tolerances required for specific applications.

Benefits of Centerless Grinding

In the modern machine shop, time is an important consideration, and center-less methods need very little setup and adjustment. In fact, compared to other methods, it’s much quicker. By saving time, you can increase your production each day, and this is an excellent way to increase your profits.
When you cut the time it takes to finish products, you can serve more customers in the same amount of time. This gives you the chance to earn new business without placing a greater demand on your workforce and company resources.

Centerless grinding ensures you have rounder parts and it’s easy to machine, long sections of pipe and other materials. You’ll have less downtime spent changing workpieces. If you don’t have the right equipment or enough space in your shop, consider hiring a trusted machine shop for the job.
