What Are Dentures?
Dentures in Plano are appliances used to replace missing teeth. They can be fixed or removable. A complete denture replaces all of the teeth on the upper or lower jaw, while a partial denture replaces only some of the teeth.
Complete Denture
A complete denture consists of an acrylic base that is the same color as the patient’s gums and fits snugly over the dental ridge. It has a row of artificial teeth and enables the patient to chew and speak normally.
Partial Denture
A partial denture can look a bit like a retainer with artificial teeth attached to it. It is custom made to fit around the patient’s remaining natural teeth.
Hybrid Denture
The hybrid denture, also known as an implant, is the third type of denture. It is a partial or complete denture that is held in place by one or more dental implants. There are several different types of hybrid dentures:
- Overdentures are removable hybrids that usually require fewer implants than other types. They are also easier to clean than are fixed dentures.
- Snap-in implant dentures are called so because they can be “snapped” onto the implants’ abutments. As they are removable, they are easy to clean. Snap-in implant dentures are also less expensive than other types of hybrid dentures.
- Screw-in implant dentures are fixed dentures. The dentist uses small screws to secure the dentures to the implants.
What’s Involved in Getting Dentures?
The dentist will take an impression of the patient’s teeth and send the resulting mold to a dental lab to have the dentures custom made. It typically takes several weeks for the lab to make the dentures. The dentist will then have the patient try them on and make any necessary adjustments.
