Tips for Understanding Your HVAC System

by | Jan 17, 2018 | HVAC Contractor

The HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) system is what is used to ensure your home is at a comfortable temperature while your air quality is as high as possible. It is not important for a homeowner to know everything about their heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system, but knowing the basics can go a long way. Understanding how they operate gives you the knowledge to get the most out of your system.

Heating System

The heating feature of your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system offers you warmth when the colder seasons starts to come in. The most popular type of heating system is a forced air system, but geothermal heating and radiant heat are both also used. With all three, the heat is made at a specific area and then moves throughout the home using different processes.

Forced, Radiant, & Geothermal

Forced air systems use a furnace to heat up the air. They then move that air throughout the home using vents and ductwork. Radiant heating uses a boiler or heating stove to build heat and pass it through the house using heating coils or water tubing in the ceiling or floors. Geothermal heating uses the ground temperature created by the sun’s rays to gather heat and pass it through the home with a heat exchanger.

Ventilation System

You may not know it, but your HVAC system has a substantial effect on the quality of the air in your home. Ventilation can control moisture levels, circulate air, remove smells, purify air, and prevent air stagnation. This system is done either mechanically, naturally, or through a combination of the two systems.

Air Conditioning System

In addition to warming the home at winter and purifying the air year-round, your HVAC system also cools the home when the weather is warmer. There are many different styles of air conditioners and each has some advantages and disadvantages. Some of the types of air conditioning that are common include split AC units, portable AC units, window AC units, and central air. While each is different, what they do is largely the same.
