Barons Market opened at 3231 University Ave. in the North Park Neighborhood, and it is a big improvement of the space, as well as an excellent match for this neighborhood. More like a combination of Trader Joe’s with a few Whole Foods concepts blended in, the store provides a salad bar, olive oil bar, freshly baked goods, fresh soups, and a vast quantity of prepared foods.

Tamarindo Latin Kitchen and Bar, located at 2906 University Ave., is placing the finishing touches upon the Latin-inspired eatery, having recently added outside signs. They are shooting for a Feb. 2017 opening… one other impending opening includes Mr. Moto’s Pizza on 3773 30th St. It is incredible how much they have transformed the area from the previous Stuff-n-Thangs resale shop.

FiveSpace Records opened at 2579 University Ave., and carries vinyl and cassette tapes. There is more retail to report on with R.A.E. women’s clothes opening on 2912 University, close to Love and Aesthetics. Also, owners founded Pretty Please inside Hillcrest. Figaro Cafe replaced Heaven Sent Desserts. Returning to North Park on 2888 University Ave. is The Barbeque Pit  and their pork ribs are delicious! Six One Nine Distillery & Tasting Room opens in Feb.

Sage Sister Flowers opened on 3069 University Avenue, and shares the area with Union Co-Work. There is a great write up on Queen Bee’s Art and Cultural Center on KPBS’ website. All demolition for Nomad Donuts 2nd location on 3102 University Ave has started. They are shooting for an opening in the Spring of 2017. Zensei Sushi is shut down for remodeling, and Yogart completed a small remodel.

In the meantime, Olympic Cafe furiously is working on their space on 2310 University Avenue. We are hearing that somebody finally is opening something inside the older International Gifts area at 30th and University, yet have not had the ability to nail down what this something is! Also, we have heard that the older Ramona Theater that was vacant for years, was sold again. Our fingers are crossed that somebody’s got ideas to open up that lovely space soon. Pershing Bikeway is nearly fully approved that is expected to create bike lanes all the way down Pershing from the northeast edge of Balboa Park to downtown. Like us at Facebook
