The Many Benefits Of Industrial Powder Coating

by | Jul 9, 2015 | Moving Companies

Virtually all metal parts purchased today for the manufacturing of everything from kitchen appliances to vehicle parts are finished with industrial powder coating. This process has evolved over the last four decades to be highly effective, both in producing a protective skin on metal as well as in allowing a range of different textures, colors and even finished looks to suit every possible use.

What is Industrial Powder Coating?

Powder coating is applied in a dry form to the surface of a metal and then heated to create a very dense coating on the surface of the metal which literally forms a skin. The powder coating compound itself is a polymer resin with pigments for color, leveling agents, flow modifiers and curatives to cause the powder to liquefy and bond with the metal surface.

Less commonly powder coating can also be applied by dipping a heated part into the powder causing it to melt and adhere to the heated part. After the part is removed from the powder it may require additional heating to complete the process.

The Benefits

The single most commonly recognized benefit to industrial powder coating is the durability of the surface. Unlike paint, it will not flake or peel with time or use. Friction between parts or between a part and another surface will not impact the powder coat even with rugged use. It is possible to scratch the surface of powder coat but requires an intensive, sustained effort to make any type of a mark.

In addition to being incredibly durable and coming in any color you may require for your parts, industrial powder coating is also very environmentally friendly. There are no solvents used in the process of either making the powder coating powder or in the process of industrial powder coating, so there are limited risks of any VOCs or volatile organic compounds being produced. This is very different than paint which is a major source of VOCs and one which is linked to respiratory problems in those working around and breathing in these compounds.

Last but not least, industrial powder coating offers a cost-effective option for surface treatment of metals for large or small orders. With is lower initial costs compared to the alternatives and its long lasting color, finish, and level of protection it is well worth consideration for any type of job.
