Over the past few decades, fire alarm systems have improved immensely. They have become technically sophisticated and increasingly reliable. As devices designed to protect life and property, the law in America requires them. One key component of many systems is the lowly fire extinguisher. It is a common sight in offices, apartment buildings, warehouses and residences of all types. In all of the United States, including Illinois, the law dictates several aspects of its placement and usage. In such instances, reference is frequent to the Life Safety Code.
Placement
The law demands the placement of fire extinguishers in various locales. Although, the specific size of a structure may reduce the number of extinguishers or even eliminate them, in fact, most businesses are required under Illinois law to make them available. Fire extinguishers must be provided:
* On every floor is the building is more than 3 stories
* In every home – including mobile homes
* Every business
* Every school
* Every institution including hospitals
* Every warehouse
If you have any doubt, check out the fire code in the city or county of your residency. It will provide specific requirements for the number and placement of fire extinguishers.
All employers must also ensure the fire extinguishers are readily accessible to employees. The employers must clearly identify the devices as such. All employees must be trained in how to handle and employ them in the case of fire.
Maintenance
Maintenance does depend on the type of structure, its usage, and type of fire extinguisher. However, in a commercial building in the State of Illinois, only a licensed company can supply and test the extinguishers. This must take place annually.
If the extinguisher is of the carbon dioxide type, it will require an annual visual inspection as well as a certification. Once every 5 years, a qualified individual must employ high-pressure hydrostatic test. It is the responsibility of the employer to make certain this happens. If a company or individual fails to comply or lies about the maintenance practices, he or she can be charged under 425 ILCS 17/- The Fire Extinguisher Service Act.
The Fire Extinguisher and the Law
Fire extinguishers are meant to protect property and save lives. They are one component of a larger fire protection system. All states support the implementation of these devices in homes, commercial enterprises, warehouses, schools and a vast array of institutions. While size will affect the mandatory presence of a fire extinguisher in Illinois buildings, it should not since fire itself has no qualms about how big a structure it burns.
