Steps Needed To Perform Crack Sealing In Madison WI

by | Sep 18, 2017 | Construction and Maintenance

If asphalt is exposed to hot, humid conditions or is covered in water for a long duration, a crack may form in pavement. Cracked pavement can diminish the beauty of a piece of property and damage can become worse if patch is not administered to a paved surface. The following project describes how to repair pavement and apply a protective sealer over asphalt. Sealer will provide pavement with a uniform appearance and will prevent pavement from cracking.

Materials

• broom

• vacuum cleaner

• water hose

• scrub brush

• detergent

• bucket

• cold patch

• trowel

• putty knife

• asphalt float

• waterproof drop cloths

• asphalt sealer

• paint roller

• tray

Clean And Patch Pavement

A broom should be used to sweep pavement. A vacuum cleaner hose can be moved over the edges of pavement to remove debris. After adding water and detergent to a bucket, a scrub brush that has a long handle can be used to remove stains from asphalt. Clean asphalt should be rinsed off with water. After asphalt dries, a trowel should be used to fill a crack with cold patch.

Cold patch is a product that does not need to be mixed with any other ingredients and will bond to pavement during crack sealing in Madison WI. If patch isn’t level with surrounding pavement, a putty knife or asphalt float can be used to smooth out patch. Patch will harden after a couple days. While waiting for patch to cure, people should not walk or drive across pavement.

Apply Sealer

Waterproof drop cloths should be used to cover property that is next to pavement. Weighted drop cloths will not shift if sealer is being applied to asphalt on a windy day. Asphalt sealer needs to be stirred before it is poured into a shallow tray. A tray can be set on a drop cloth during the application process.

A paint roller that has a long handle attached to it can be used to apply sealer to pavement. Sealer should be rolled across pavement in straight lines. A paint roller should be dipped into a paint tray as needed until pavement is covered with an even coat of sealer.
