During summer, our passion for knitting the tops slows down. Summer is the season to prepare for the frosting winter; therefore, don’t let the heat of summer lay you off your passion and love. Many cool light-weight knit tank tops can be made within a couple of hours simply by utilizing the cozy summer afternoons. Here are some tips to make knitting the tank tops easier for you.
Get Tricky with Yoke and Arm Measurements
When we knit tank tops and sweaters, we don’t give much importance to the measurements of upper arm. The upper arm fits itself to the size of your arm in half or full sleeve sweaters. But the upper arm measurement is very important for the accuracy of your sweater or tank top when you don’t want to add sleeves to it.
There are different ways of wearing the tank tops. Some people knit undershirt tee-style tops and some people wear them as sleeveless sweaters on dress shirts. Before starting your knitting project, decide the way you will wear it.
For knitting the armhole, you need to be a little tricky. Make the gauge swatch of the knitting pattern you have chosen. Measure the size of any well-fitted tank top and compare it with the size of the gauge swatch. Make adjustments in the knitting pattern if needed. To knit tank tops the professional way, always keep the size of the arm hole almost 1.5 inches smaller than the actual size of the best fitted top. The knitted tank top will stretch to your size when you wear it.
Choose the Summer Fiber Carefully
When it comes to summer wear, we all prefer choosing cotton on all other types of fabrics. But to knit tank tops, cotton may not be a good choice to go. Cotton yarn becomes very loose after washing or blocking. If you wear a tank top several times without washing, it will lose its shape and length. After washing it several times, the yarn will start losing its elasticity permanently and a medium tank top will become large sized permanently.
Some people have skin sensitive to fabrics other than cotton. If you want to knit tank tops with cotton, then choose thin or close patterns. Avoid patterns with stripes because stripes make the tank tops become loose horizontally or vertically. Patterns with bigger holes and spaces tend to lose their elasticity lesser than others.
Play with Colors
Summer comes with the opportunity to play with colors. Choose bright and catchy colors or add a touch of fresh colors in your plain sweaters. Make unique combinations of tank tops to give your personality a livelier and fresher look this summer.
