Duck Hunting in the Winter: Tips, Tricks and Techniques for Success Duck Hunting in the Winter: Tips, Tricks and Techniques for Success

It’s always fun to go duck hunting in Texas, but there can be some unique challenges posed by the cold weather of winter. Here are just a few hunting suggestions if you want to bag a mallard even when it’s frosty outside.

Watch the Winds

A windy lake is a great place to hunt for ducks, especially when it’s cold. The key is to look for areas that the wind isn’t ravaging: hills, trees, shrubs and sheltered coves. These calm spots are where the ducks will seek refuge from the chill.

Look for Open Water

When lakes and rivers start to freeze, ducks will congregate around water sources that remain open to them. This can result in some extraordinary hunting opportunities! Just look for broken ice, melted snow, small streams and wind-exposed bluffs.

Use Decoys

Decoys are a time-honored tradition in duck hunting, and they’re especially useful in cold weather when the ducks might need a little extra coaxing to show themselves. The good news is that you don’t need an entire army of decoys. A few should get the job done just fine.
