For those that are new to working with panel-clips , which are also commonly known as Z-clips or Z panel hangers, using this handy system to attach heavy objects to a wall to work with architectural panels or even display cases is very easy.
The benefit of this type of fixture or panel attachment is that it mounts from the back, eliminating any screw or fastener holes on the exterior of the panel or object. Additionally, since the two sides interlock, it provides a secure, durable and very strong hold while still providing the option to easily remove the panel or object by lifting straight up and out.
When using panel-clips, there are a few different mistakes that can be easy to make. By double checking everything before you start the project you can eliminate these issues easily.
Failing to Check Level
It is important to realize that using a Z-clip will provide a solid and precise positioning of the object or the panel. This is very different from a picture hanging hook where you can adjust the picture, mirror, sign or other object to level by simply moving one side up or down.
Check the level of the Z-clip on the wall as well as on the back of the object for a precise and perfectly level final result.
Using the Wrong Fasteners
While panel-clips provide a solid hold between the two clips, choosing the correct fasteners to mount the clips to the wall and the back of the object will be important. Choose the right length of screws or fasteners and make sure the pre-drilled holes will correspond to the position of the studs in the wall, particularly for the heavier objects and panels.
Also, keep in mind to cut the Z-clips slightly shorter in length than the exterior frame edge of the object. This will make sure the clips are out of sight, providing a neat, professional look.
