Differential Pressure Transmitters for Low Pressure Applications

Differential pressure transmitters are one of the most used and reliable means of measuring pressure differences for industrial, commercial, and domestic applications. Common uses for these transmitters is to measure pressure that serves as the basis of other measurements, making accuracy a very important factor in the manufacturing and operation of these transmitters.

Its Construction and Use
Differential pressure transmitters are composed of two halves that are used to measure a difference in pressure. They work by reading an increase in one pressure or a decrease in another pressure, rather than trying to fix the reference like gauge pressure which measures atmospheric pressure or absolute pressure, which measures vacuum pressure. Both gauge and absolute pressure are related to differential pressure.

The pressure transmitter is comprised of two different housings. One housing encases the pressure sensing element in the bottom half. The other housing on top houses the electronic components. One housing is labeled ‘high’ and the other is labeled ‘low’, referencing the affect the port has on the output signal.

How Do Differential Pressure Transmitters Work?
Differential pressure, much like gauge and absolute pressure can used as a basis to other measurements such as flow, level, density, and even temperature. Differential pressure is commonly used as the basis to measurements such as level and flow. The system that the transmitter is part of is composed of flow meter with two different elements or ports, the primary element and the secondary element. The primary element is designed to produce a different pressure as the flow increases. The primary can be an element such as the flow nozzle or an orifice plate.

The secondary element is the differential transmitter. This piece measures the different pressure that the primary element produces, resulting in the transmission of the measurement. The secondary elements then transmit a differential pressure signal that references the calibrated range of pressure created by the primary port.

Common Uses for Pressure Transmitters
There are a variety of pressure transmitters that can be used for a wide range of industrial applications. They are commonly used to measure differential pressure at high static line pressures as well as for measuring extremely low pressures of liquid and gas. They are also used in measuring low pressures in the HVAC industry.
