When it comes to insulation, most people immediately think of fiberglass insulation. You know the stuff, it is pink and comes in a large roll and good luck if you get it on your skin. While fiberglass is the most commonly known insulation type, it is far from the only option you have. Here are a few others that you may not be familiar with.
Foam Board
Foam board insulation is one of the more popular types, especially for cold storage in California and other hot climate areas. This is because it has a high R-Value while still being thin and easy to install. Since the board is rigid, it is much easier to install over flat panels than a roll of fiberglass would be. Foam is also a great option for insulating your floors since it is flat and with a board on top of it, it can withstand the weight of someone walking on it.
Spray Foam
This is another type of foam insulation, but it is sprayed in rather than coming as a rigid board. This type tends to have a higher R-Value but requires professional installation in many cases. The foam can be harmful in its liquid form, so you do not want to attempt this yourself unless you have experience doing it.
Natural Fiber
This is a fairly new insulation type and is installed similarly to fiberglass insulation. Natural fiber insulation is made of various natural fibers such as wool, cotton, or cellulose fibers. This will provide excellent insulation while being less hazardous than fiberglass. The problem with fiberglass is that it can get stuck in your skin it you touch it. This will cause a burning, itching feeling until it works its way out. The softer, natural fibers will not do this.
These are just three of the many types of insulation available on the market now. There are many others, so be sure to ask your contractor what they recommend before you decide on one.
