Choosing a Professional Siding Contractor

by | May 30, 2014 | Roofing

Siding is such an integral part of your house that you just can’t afford to have it installed improperly.  With costs for sliding ranging from $5,000 to $50,000 depending on the type of siding and the area covered, you’d better make sure you hire a reputable siding contractor. Here are the critical questions you need to ask when looking for one:

Material and Finish
Siding comes in various materials and finishes, so the one you choose must suit your house aesthetically and be resilient enough and endure the elements. A professional contractor will help you choose the appropriate siding for your home, and walk you through the pros and cons of choosing vinyl, aluminum, cement fiber and other types of siding. For example, wood siding is prone to paint problems if your house is not properly ventilated and stained finishes usually require lower maintenance. So ask questions (and as many as you can think of). A good siding contractor should explain the differences between the proposed siding options clearly. Make sure you are comfortable with the proposed method and materials.

Verify that the siding contractor is properly licensed and has comprehensive general liability insurance and workers’ compensation insurance. If a contractor assures you that he has a business license, this is not the same as being licensed.

References
Of course, you shouldn’t hire anyone unless you check references. Ask for a list of recent clients (preferably from the past 12 months) whom you can contact to verify the contractor’s experience and quality of work (the more the better, but you should ask for at least five). Contact the references asking if they would hire the contractor again, if the quality of the work was satisfactory and if the job was completed on time and within budget.

Payment Terms
Make sure the estimate you get is detailed and outlines all items – labor, materials, taxes and other expenses. Additionally, there should be agreed upon payment schedule before the contractor starts the job.

Again, siding represents a significant investment, so a good contractor will give you information on how to properly maintain it once it’s been installed.
