Don’t Settle for Poor Child Care in Pittsburgh, PA

While there are many varied choices for child care in Pittsburgh PA, they are not all created equal. When looking for that perfect place, keep your eyes open for some telltale signs that your child may not get all you hope for out of their days at some facilities, even if they seem safe and clean:

There is no consistent stimulating environment for the children. Are activities all child-directed? There should be periods of free play, but the staff should have a schedule which includes a variety of activities. Do you see the children enjoying music, read aloud time, art, drama and sensory play? Is there a curriculum which takes the child’s overall development into consideration, noting the child’s social, emotional and physical development as well as laying a foundation for skills in math, reading, science and social studies?

There is little open communication with the parents. With current technology, there are many ways to keep parents abreast of what their children are doing. This type of information should be provided by the facility. Also, look to see if there is plenty of opportunities, both formal and informal, for talking with staff and administrators about your child’s activities and development.

Caregivers have little sympathy for the children. While you are busy, these workers are your stand-ins. You hope they will offer your child the comfort, security and emotional support that they need to thrive. However, some caregivers can be cold, ignoring a crying child in distress, even bullying them. When a little one misbehaves, caregivers should offer calm redirection and positive correction, not harsh punishments.

The facility has few or lax guidelines for its clients. A set of guidelines for the conduct of the children is important for a stable environment. A professional program also clearly outlines the expectations it has of the parents.

Programs do not have accreditation or professional standards for teachers. Check the state standards for the facility you are considering and take note of any infractions. Also, ask about its accreditation by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Staff should have ongoing training and be held to professional standards such as those of the Keystone STAR program, which provides standards for teacher evaluation.
