4 Ways to Better Dental Health for Your Family

Good family dental habits can help everyone in your family enjoy taking care of their dental health. That includes the kids, too. How?

It’s never too soon to make sure your kids know and learn all about what it takes to have good dental habits. Here are a few tips from Parents to make sure your kids grow up without any deep-seated fear of going to the dentist’s office:

* Use fluoride toothpaste. According to American Dental Association, or ADA, tooth decay is one of the top diseases children suffer from. In fact, it’s five times more prevalent than asthma. Some children, at as early as two years old, are being brought to the operating chair for cavity treatment because of extensive tooth decay.
* Control the candy intake. Choosing a good toothpaste is key, but a better way to protect your children’s dental health is to control their consumption of candy. Some parents take this a step further by banning candies until the kids are old enough to go to school. If you don’t want to take that drastic step, then monitoring their candy consumption is good way to keep their teeth healthy and free of cavities.
* Pay a visit to the dentist. Do this often. And do it while they’re young. This will help eliminate any dread or fear from visiting the dentist. Also, by bringing kids to the dentist at an early age, your dentist gets to see and diagnose problems early on. If that’s not enough incentive for you, according to a study published by Pediatrics, kids who went to the dentist before turning a year old had 40 percent lower dental costs during the first five years of their life than children who didn’t receive the same dental care and attention at that age.
* Teach them how to brush their teeth. In this day and age, when information is always within reach, it’s surprising that a staggering number of people still don’t know how to brush their teeth properly. Instead of aggressively brushing back and forth, teach them to use a circular motion when they brush their teeth. This will help dislodge the cavity and bacteria from their teeth.

By raising kids who aren’t afraid of dentists, you’re not just giving your kids better teeth, you’re training your kids to have great family dental habits in the future.
