Summer is on the way, and that means cookouts, BBQ’s and parties by the pool. It also means you go out to buy crab legs and all that entails. Of course, if you have never bought crab legs before, you are going to want to be careful and do it the right way. Seafood can be dangerous when it’s not bought at the proper place or prepared the proper way. With that in mind, read on below for a few tips to help you find the right crab legs this upcoming summer season.

What Should You Look for?

There are only two options when it comes to crab. Make sure that when you buy crab legs, you follow one of these options. You can buy the crab live or already cooked and processed in some way. No third option is available. Whether you’re looking for crab legs, picked crab meat or some other sort, these are the only options out there if you want it to be any good and safe to eat.

One thing you should never do is buy crab that is dead and raw. The reason is that there are enzymes in the body of the crab will turn it to an icky mush after it is dead and still raw. Your best bet is alive or cooked and processed if you want the meat to be fresh and ready to eat.

What to Avoid

If you are buying online and having them shipped to your home, then make sure that the crab is alive when it gets to your home, if that is how you ordered it. If you can touch the crab and it doesn’t move, it needs to be avoided.

Any type of fresh meat that smells off should be avoided as well, whether it’s crab legs or crab meat.

Storing Crab

If you have ordered your crab live, then you will want to eat them the day that you get them. For the tiny bit of time that you need to store them, place them in the fridge in an open container with wet newspaper, you want to keep them as wet as possible.

Fresh crab legs and fresh crab meat can be put in the fridge for up to two days, or it can be frozen. Why would you want to do that, though? Everyone knows that crab legs or any crab meat is better and more succulent when it’s eaten right away.
